Contest Terms and Conditions
Seattle Writing Contest invites all visitors to enter and compete in our writing contests. In order to help guide protocol in running, administering, and enforcing the rules and restrictions of the contests, we have created the Contest Terms and Conditions. We urge all potential entrants to read through this document, especially before entering one of our contests.
Contest Entry and Entrant Agreement:
These Contest Terms and Conditions (the “Terms and Conditions”), apply to all contest categories hosted by Seattle Writing Contest (collectively, the “Contest” or the “Contests”. By paying entry and uploading your writing for Contest submission, you are agreeing to the Terms and Conditions herein.
Seattle Writing Contest reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to change, modify, add or remove portions of these Terms and Conditions, at any time. It is your responsibility to check these Terms and Conditions periodically for changes. Your continued entry of one or more Contests following the posting of changes will mean that you accept and agree to the changes. As long as you comply with these Terms and Conditions, Seattle Writing Contest grants you a personal, non-refundable, non-transferable, limited privilege to enter and compete in our Contests
1.) Contest Nature and Basic Guidelines:
- All Contests are competitions which are based on skill, and judged by measureable criteria. There will be no luck or random chance involved in the screening, judging, or ranking of any entrees.
- All Contests require paid entry. Absent promotional or special case situations, any entrant submissions which are found without full entry fee will be disqualified.
- All Contests are first screened by Seattle Writing Contest staff readers, then judged by invitee judges. No communication, criteria, or judgement outside individuals chosen by Seattle Writing Contest for the specific Contest category will be considered.
- Each decision made for each specific Contest is final, and no further correspondence. gestures, or petition will be considered; nonetheless, Seattle Writing Contest reserves full right to overturn, revise, or cancel any previous decisions made in regards to any Contest, at anytime with or without notice.
- There is no region restriction on any of our Contests.
- Contest entry is restricted to all individuals under the age of 13. Seattle Writing Contest may or may not choose to waive this restriction in the event where written and signed consent is obtained by the guardian of the minor, and payment is made in full with consent or by of said guardian.
2.) Contest Categories and Formats:
Seattle Writing Contest currently offers contests in 3 different Categories of Literature; Poetry Contest, Short Story Contest, and Long Fiction Contest [Hyperlinks on the words for each of the contest categories to their respective pages please]. The specific format for each of these Contest categories can be seen described on each of the pages.
3.) Screening Process and Criteria Metric Disclosure:
Each of our Contests are based on measurable skill. In order to effectively narrow down entrees Seattle Writing Contest relies on a proprietary point based screening metric, which our staff readers will use to comb through entrees. Each reader is assigned in such a way that the process is redundant, and each one entry is screened by multiple readers.
Entrees are penalized points for mistakes in grammar and spelling, incoherence, or lack of specific literary elements such as prose, character or plot. Entrees are awarded points for lack of technical errors, continuity, and attractive literary elements, again, such as prose, plot or character. These points are weighted toward penalizing and rewarding more obvious elements of the writing and lighter for the more numerous, subtler elements. The entrees with the highest point totals are considered as the finalists and then sent to the final invitee judges.
The point system is designed in such a way that ties are actually impossible. However, just as a fail-safe measure, in the event of a tie, Seattle Writing Contest reserves right to all form of remedy, including but not limited to re-screening based on a differently weighted metric scale, committee decision, public polls, and any non-stated methods.
4.) Finalist Judging Process and Invitee Judges Disclosure:
Each Contest ranking of the finalist entrees are determined by individuals who have been hand-selected by Seattle Writing Contest to participate as invitee judges (collectively known as, “Judges”) for a specific Contest. Said Judges are considered based on relevance, acclaim, and ties to the literary industry.
The Judges are sent the finalist entrees and are asked to rank the entrees based on their knowledge and preference. Each Judge is allotted a specific number of points, which will bedistributed to the finalist entries of their choice. These ranking allotments of the Judges are tabulated, and used to form a consensus on the ranking of finalist entries.
We respect the prowess and discipline that each of our invitee Judges have crafted in literature, and thus are able to fully vest our trust into their decisions. We urge our Contest participants to give our invitee Judges the same respect.
Again, the ranking system is designed in such a way that ties are actually impossible. However, just as a fail-safe measure, in the event of a tie, Seattle Writing Contest reserves right to all form of remedy, including but not limited to re-casting ranking responses, committee decision, public polls, and any non-stated methods
